Smoking in movies

tobacco industry exposed

Ok, here’s a newsflash – Hogwarts doesn’t exist, Indiana Jones isn’t real and Batman is a super hero in a comic.  And you know when you watch a film and see everyone is smoking, well that’s as far from the truth as a man dressed like a bat fighting crime. Only 19% of the general population in Australia smoke.

Here are some research findings about smoking in movies:
  • Young people are three times more likely to go to the movies than adults.
  • Young people who view more smoking in movies are not only at an increased risk of taking up smoking, but they are also likely to smoke more!
  • Smoking in movies is the most effective tobacco marketing strategy to get young people to take up smoking, accounting for 52% of teenagers who start smoking, an effect even stronger than direct product advertising.
